Beyond Fifty: My Journey to Rewrite the Aging Story
Aging doesn’t mean fading—it can mean thriving.
"I want to be healthy, stronger and fit beyond fifty". It's a mantra I keep repeat to myself every day. In many Asian communities, there’s a common belief that aging means inevitable sickness and decline. But I refuse to accept that. I want to break the cycle, bust the myth, and rewrite the narrative. Aging doesn’t have to mean fading-it can mean thriving. And I’m living proof that it's never too late to choose vitality.
The News
"It was a scorching day when I received news: my mother had been hospitalized due to complications. My heart dropped the moment I heard it. I felt a surge of adrenaline, like my body went into shock. I still remember vividly sitting stiffly in the corridor outside the emergency room, my clothes clung to my skin, soaked through with stress. My palms were drenched, a trembling testament to how fear overrides comfort.
I couldn't sit still. My body kept moving, back and forth, caught in an endless loop of anxiety, the clock on the wall ticked slower with each pass. There were too many possibilities swirling in my mind-each 'what if' echoing louder than the last. It was like anxiety had taken the reins, pulling me through worst-case scenarios with no pause for breath. The thought repeated like a broken record.
My mom gets sick often and sometimes has to stay in the hospital for more than ten days. This past year, I started paying closer attention to her health, hoping to find ways to help her avoid getting hospitalized. I’ve learned that her diet and lack of exercise might be the cause, so I’ve been trying to figure out how I can support her better.
That experience became a wake-up call-a turning point in how I viewed health, not just for my mother, but for myself.
The Determination
Exercising regularly and eating healthy isn’t easy—it’s a habit that’s best started early. But don’t get me wrong, it’s never too late. You can absolutely build a healthy lifestyle even in your forties or fifties. Still, beginning young gives you a stronger foundation, and that belief fuels my commitment to living healthier.
I started practicing yoga at home, without a mat and still in my pajamas. I couldn’t finish the entire session at first—out of breath and soaked in sweat—but it felt amazing. That feeling kept me going. I committed to doing yoga three to four times a week, building my strength gradually. Alongside that, I began adjusting my eating habits, cutting down on excessive calories in both food and drinks. It wasn’t easy, but it was the beginning of a healthier lifestyle.
It’s been a year now, and I’m still going strong. I began with yoga and have since added Pilates to my routine. Turning movement into a lifestyle has brought so many benefits—not just physical health, but visible changes too. My skin looks clearer, smoother, and more radiant. Even my mindset has shifted. It fuels sharper thinking and helps me make better decisions, whether in daily life or in my work. I’ve come to realize that wellness doesn’t just change your body—it changes the way you live.
Death is inevitable—but until that moment comes, staying healthy and fit is the best gift you can give yourself. There’s no shortcut to make it happen. You have to start, and the sooner you begin, the better. Don’t wait for motivation to knock—build momentum through action. And with each healthy habit, you might just inspire someone you love to do the same.
Health isn’t just a goal—it’s a legacy. And I’m building mine one breath, one movement, and one mindful choice at a time.
